Coaching — Roles and Requirements

Purpose
This Standard Operating Procedure establishes the BCMA Association Standard for coaches at all BCMA events and sanctioned and non-sanctioned competitions. It ensures consistent, professional conduct that prioritizes athlete safety, development and compliance with the requirements of the British Columbia Athletic Commission.
Scope
Applies to all coaches, assistant coaches and corner personnel representing BCMA member clubs and athletes at all BCMA events and competitions.
Definitions
Coach: A registered individual responsible for preparing, supporting and guiding athletes before, during and after competition. Corner: The area immediately outside the competition area used by coaches to support their athlete between rounds. BCAC: British Columbia Athletic Commission. Chief Official: The official responsible for the overall management and supervision of the contest.
Policy Statement
BCMA supports and aligns its coaching standards with the BC Athletic Commission. Where any inconsistency exists, BC Athletic Commission requirements take precedence.
Roles and Responsibilities
• Coaches must prioritize athlete safety, respect and fair competition. • Coaches are responsible for preparing athletes physically, technically and mentally. • Coaches must comply with BCAC rules, BCMA standards and the directions of officials. • Coaches are role models and must maintain professional conduct at all times.
Procedures — Coaching Standards
7.1 Coach Requirements • Coaches must be at least 18 years of age. • Coaches must be registered with BCMA. • Coaches must adhere to the BCMA Code of Conduct. 7.2 Before the Contest • Arrive on time and be prepared. • Ensure athlete is dressed appropriately and equipped in accordance with BCAC rules. • Attend pre-fight meeting if requested by officials. 7.3 During the Contest • Coaches must remain in their assigned corner. • Provide positive, respectful and constructive instruction. • Refrain from any behavior that may intimidate, distract or disrespect officials or opponents. 7.4 Between Rounds • Provide tactical advice and encouragement. • Ensure the athlete remains focused and complies with equipment rules. • No physical contact with the athlete except as permitted by BCAC rules. 7.5 After the Contest • Demonstrate sportsmanship regardless of the result. • Escort athlete off the competition area when directed by officials. • Support athlete recovery and debrief respectfully.
Compliance
Failure to follow this SOP or BC Athletic Commission rules may result in removal from the event, disqualification, or other disciplinary action as determined by the Chief Official and in accordance with BCAC regulations.
