Competition Area (Flat Ground) Requirements

Purpose
This Standard Operating Procedure establishes the BCMA Association Standard for flat ground competition areas used during sanctioned and non-sanctioned events. It promotes athlete safety, fair competition and consistent event standards while ensuring alignment with the requirements of the British Columbia Athletic Commission.
Scope
Applies to all BCMA hosted or supported events, including coaches, referees, officials, athletes, seconds, promoters, volunteers and member clubs.
Definitions
Competition Area (Flat Ground): A flat, level area with a matted surface and clearly marked boundaries where a contest takes place. BCAC: British Columbia Athletic Commission. Referee: The official responsible for enforcing the rules and conducting the contest. Judge: The official responsible for scoring the contest in accordance with BCAC rules.
Policy Statement
BCMA supports and aligns its competition procedures with the BC Athletic Commission. Where any inconsistency exists, BC Athletic Commission requirements take precedence.
Roles and Responsibilities
• Promoters: Ensure the competition area complies with BCAC standards before the event. • Chief Official: Verify the competition area is safe, suitable and ready for competition. • Referees: Conduct the contest in accordance with BCAC rules. • Judges: Score each contest in accordance with BCAC rules. • Member Clubs: Support compliance with BCMA Association Standards.
Procedures
1. All contests shall take place in a flat, level competition area that meets the requirements of the British Columbia Athletic Commission. 2. The competition area shall be clean, secure, properly padded and free from hazards before the commencement of each contest. 3. The surface shall be covered with approved mats that provide adequate shock absorption and prevent slipping or injury. 4. The competition area shall have clearly marked boundaries visible to officials, competitors and spectators. 5. Each contest shall be officiated by one (1) BC Athletic Commission licensed referee and three (3) BC Athletic Commission licensed judges. 6. Only authorized officials, competitors and approved seconds shall be allowed in or on the competition area during a contest. 7. Referees and the Chief Official shall inspect the competition area before each contest and may delay or cancel the contest if it is unsafe.
Compliance
Non-compliance may result in removal from the event, disqualification, loss of sanction, or other disciplinary action as determined by the Chief Official and in accordance with BC Athletic Commission rules.
