Hygiene and Sanitation

Purpose

This Standard Operating Procedure establishes the BCMA Association Standard for hygiene and sanitation at BCMA events and competitions. It helps ensure a clean, safe, and healthy environment for athletes, officials, staff and spectators and supports the prevention of illness and the spread of infection.

Scope

Applies to all BCMA sanctioned and non-sanctioned events, including competitions, training sessions, warm-up areas, rings, equipment, facilities, staff, volunteers, and participants.

Definitions

Hygiene: Practices that promote personal cleanliness and good health. Sanitation: The process of cleaning and disinfecting surfaces and equipment to reduce germs. Disinfection: The use of approved products to kill harmful microorganisms on surfaces and equipment. Contamination: The presence of harmful microbes on a surface or object.

Policy Statement

BCMA is committed to maintaining high standards of hygiene and sanitation at all events in accordance with BC Athletic Commission requirements and public health recommendations.

Roles and Responsibilities

• Event Organizer: Ensures this SOP is implemented and resources are available. • Staff/Volunteers: Follow hygiene and sanitation procedures and report issues. • Athletes: Maintain personal hygiene and use provided sanitation facilities. • Officials: Ensure compliance within their area of responsibility.

Procedures — Hygiene and Sanitation

7.1 Personal Hygiene • All participants must maintain good personal hygiene. • Athletes should shower or wash before arriving at the event. • Clean clothing and gear must be worn at all times. 7.2 Hand Hygiene • Hand sanitizing stations or soap and water must be available in all key areas. • Wash or sanitize hands before and after competition, training, and using shared equipment. 7.3 Equipment Sanitation • All shared equipment (e.g., gloves, pads, weights) must be cleaned and disinfected between uses. • Use approved disinfectants suitable for the equipment. • Allow equipment to dry before reuse. 7.4 Ring and Facility Cleaning • The ring, canvas, ropes, and turnbuckle pads must be cleaned and disinfected before and after each event. • Floors, seating, tables, and high-touch surfaces must be cleaned regularly. 7.5 Waste Management • Provide adequate waste and recycling bins throughout the venue. • Dispose of waste regularly and prevent overflow. • Used tape, bandages, and other waste must be placed in lined bins. 7.6 Sanitation of Washrooms • Washrooms must be clean, stocked, and inspected regularly. • Report any issues to event staff immediately. 7.7 Illness and Exclusion • Individuals showing signs of illness (e.g., fever, vomiting, diarrhea, skin infections) must not participate. • Follow public health guidelines regarding illness and communicable diseases.

Compliance

Failure to follow this SOP or BC Athletic Commission rules may result in removal from the event, disqualification, or other disciplinary action as determined in accordance with BCAC regulations.
