Timekeeping — Roles and Requirements

Purpose

This Standard Operating Procedure establishes the BCMA Association Standard for timekeepers at BCMA events and competitions. It ensures accurate time management and clear communication in alignment with the requirements of the British Columbia Athletic Commission.

Scope

Applies to all timekeepers officiating at BCMA sanctioned and non-sanctioned competitions, including referees, officials, athletes, promoters, volunteers and member clubs.

Definitions

Timekeeper: The official responsible for operating the official timekeeper equipment and managing round, rest and stoppage times. BCAC: British Columbia Athletic Commission. Chief Official: The official responsible for the overall management and supervision of the contest.

Policy Statement

BCMA supports and aligns its timekeeping standards with the BC Athletic Commission. Where any inconsistency exists, BC Athletic Commission requirements take precedence.

Roles and Responsibilities

• Chief Official: Confirms round lengths and rest periods before each contest and oversees timekeeping. • Timekeeper: Accurately operates the official timer, keeps time, and signals the end of rounds and rest periods. • Referee: Relies on the timekeeper for accurate timing and may stop the contest if timekeeping fails. • Promoters / Event Organizers: Ensure timekeeping equipment is tested and functioning prior to the event. • Member Clubs: Support professionalism and respect for officials and the timing process.

Procedures — Timekeeping Standards

7.1 Timekeeper Requirements • Timekeepers must be at least 16 years of age. • Timekeepers must be familiar with BCAC rules and standard round timing. • Timekeepers must be impartial and attentive at all times. 7.2 Before the Contest • Confirm round length, rest period and number of rounds with the Chief Official. • Test and reset the timer before the first bout. • Ensure timing signals (bell/horn) are functioning. 7.3 During the Contest • Start and stop the timer as directed by the referee. • Keep accurate time for each round and rest period. • Provide clear audible or visible signals at the end of each round and rest period. 7.4 Stoppages / Delays • Stop the timer immediately when the referee stops the contest. • Resume timing only when instructed by the referee. • Notify the Chief Official of any timing issues. 7.5 After the Contest • Reset the timer for the next contest. • Report any equipment malfunctions to the Chief Official. • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times. 7.6 Equipment Standards • Only approved timing equipment shall be used. • Backup timing device must be available. • Keep timer visible to the referee and away from distractions.

Compliance

Failure to follow this SOP or BC Athletic Commission rules may result in removal from the event, disqualification, or other disciplinary action as determined by the Chief Official and in accordance with BCAC regulations.
